Civic 2017 HB CVT Questions

I have a 2017 Civic HB EX CVT. I found out about Hondata when I was searching for an answer to the noticeable "lag" to engage the turbo when I accelerated. All I really want is the lag to go away. Any additional performance is a plus. However, I just have some questions as I've never done this before and I'd appreciate guidance. Forgive me if these questions have been addressed before in a prior thread. I went through them as best I could.

1. My car is just a couple of months old and I'm concerned about voiding the warranty and/or additional wear and tear from a base map flash. I would only be doing the +6 PSI at most. However, I understand the ECU can be flashed back to stock. Is that something I should do even when taking it to the dealership for an oil change?

2. I've read that Honda dealerships will start offering this same ECU boost. Is that true?

3. Will this ECU flash mean I need to use Premium fuel even though the CVT is only on regular unleaded?

4. Are the base maps ever updated with further tweaking done or even perhaps "issues" found on the previous maps?

1. It's up to you. According the Moss/Magnason act, a warranty cannot be outright voided, but individual dealers tend to do as they please (both ways - some have positive responses to reflashes). It would be reasonable to expect that some engine and transmission repairs would not be covered from the extra power from a reflash.
2. Some Honda dealers are using our dealer FlashPro to reflash ECUs, but there is not a Honda generally issued reflash that Honda dealers can use.
3. You can use any fuel. It will make more power of higher octane (7-9 hp from memory). Try both and see.
4. No changes to the base calibrations. The calibrations are fairly simple for the turbo engines. You tell it to make more power. The ECU takes care of the fuel, ignition, cam angle, boost etc to make more power.

Thank you for the responses. While researching further, I see that these are not "street legal" and I read in another resource it is due to needing approved emissions certification. I read in that forum it took 4000 miles on a reflash before this could be done. Is achieving the street legal emissions for this FlashPro Civic 2016+ 1.5 Turbo still in progress?

FlashPro is CARB legal. link above is for the carb legal FlashPro unit that you would need to get if you want to be street legal and emission friendly. Not sure where you read it requires 4000 miles but it only takes 20 or so miles to get all the readiness to set

I had FlashPro non CARB since day 1 of release (12/15/16). I put about 10,000miles on it and the car still runs great. It shows no sign of wear and tear. Still getting 35-40+mpg on the highway depending if its flat or not.

The CARB FlashPro is US emissions legal in all 50 states. I'm not sure where the 4000 mile number comes from. The only thing that I can think of is that for emissions lab testing you need a car of a certain mileage. Anyhow, we put a 2016 and 2017 Civic through the federal emissions test(s) and have certification that it does not adversely affect emissions.
As a note, you can load the exact same calibration that the CARB FlashPro uses on a race FlashPro, and the emissions will be the same.

I just now saw that and was about to ask this question... So is there a performance difference between the CARB and non-CARB, or is it just a matter of the CARB FlashPro has been "certified?"

The only difference is that the CARB FlashPro can only load CARB calibrations, but there is no actual difference between calibrations themselves. eg the 6 psi calibration on a CARB FlashPro and Race FlashPro will run exactly the same.

Wasn't there a (very) recent change that Hondata made... a new option, at any rate:
I believe now you can use the Eco button to utilize the stock ECU mapping...?

So - with Eco disengaged - you get the Hondata flashed tune.
With Eco engaged - you get the stock tune.

It is just an option (I saw a screenshot - it's a checkbox), so I'm not sure what the Eco button does if you don't select that option.

I am repeating this info second-hand off a 10th gen Honda enthusiast site - I'm here to investigate getting one of these myself, I haven't obtained one yet. It's not yet my firsthand knowledge. Can you confirm or deny?

Yes, you are correct. In ECO mode the power level is approximately the same as stock. In non-ECO mode, the ECU will make more power and boost.

I though the ECO question was concerned with if Hondata altered some of the other ECO parameters, which we do not.

I have received my FlashPro (2016+ US Civic 1.5 Turbo CARB) and proceeded to carefully step through the instructions. I just want to make sure that this is expected, but while the ECU was being flashed, my dashboard started prompting me with every error possible:

Vehicle Stability Assist Problem
Hill Start Assist Problem
Charging System Problem
Brake System Problem
Tire Pressure Problem
etc.

When the flash was down it said it was complete and told me to turn off my ignition, but when I tried, I heard an error beep each time. I kept trying and only after I got a break in the rolling errors was I able to turn the car off.

Now, I have not tried to start it again and I really want to make sure this is expected behavior before I proceed. Please confirm!

That's normal, the ecu disconnects from the canbus system. So the errors will pop up. Just press the Start button longer to shut the power off. when you start it back up , all the codes will be gone. you might have some errors on the headunit but dont worry about those. it will go away

Ok, I started it up and it seems fine. Thank you for the quick reply... didn't see anything about this in the video tutorials.

I'll go for a test drive a bit later and share my first impressions!
