Boost Controller - Seems to want to work but super sensitive

Post by migee »

I don't have access to my car for a bit, but this has been on my mind and bothering me why it wasn't working. I'll work on getting a datalog and calibration when I have my car working again. I just want some suggestions on why this happened:

I set up a solenoid for an internal wastegate setup (b18b greddy kit). Port 1 - Filter, 2 -Wastegate, 3 - manifold vac source. I tested the solenoid accross battery, switches on and when blown through goes through filter like it should. I had to get a hose a bit longer so I bought some new hose (MBC installed in different location, and I was disconnecting this), and I noticed it was a tad skinnier but I ran it directly to my wastegate and it worked fine there. All good I thought.

Fixed duty cycle
normally closed solenoid
a11 enabled
frequency left at default
boost cut 15 PSI
wastegate 7 PSI

I started testing, and started with a duty of 1%. The instructions say I should see 1lb of boost off the bat. Well I didn't see anything. I got up to 30%, still nothing. 35% and hit boost cut. I went to 32%, 7psi. 34% boost cut. Wierd. I tried 33% and it hit 7PSI but I noticed it was fluxuating. I tried messing with the frequency (78 and 45 used) but the results were the same with the flux just changing (slower when on 45).

I pulled to a lot and set activation pressure below vaccuum, and when set to 50% duty I noticed the gauge fluxuating but only around the same number the vacuum was already at. Should I have not had a vacuum leak from the solenoid by doing that?

Is there anything obvious from this that needs to be fixed until I get a datalog to confirm?

I can confirm soon, but I'm 99% sure its a MAC 35a-aaa-ddba-1ba.

On website it lists this as :
12 VDC 5.4 WATT INLINE VALVE WITH 1/8" PORTS
cv .08

So this is not a Hondata solenoid?

I had the same problem before, I used a solenoid frequency of 20HZ and it fixed everything.

I'll give it a shot. I think I went down to 35hz in the past, maybe it wasnt enough. How fine can you adjust your boost now?

Seems.... a bit better I suppose. As I actually see it limiting it to a value higher than the wastegate but it SPIKES like crazy, I have to start the run out of my powerband otherwise it will spike way too high.

Cut @ 15psi / 7 @ WG

Calibration(Minor changes to boost control/cut such as lower activation point to fight spiking I think)

Datalog (25Hz Duty 77%) - Gear 3 WOT, easily hits cut (15)
Datalog (25Hz Duty 75%) - Gear 3 WOT, spike to 11.3, down to 8.5 and holds
Datalog (25Hz Duty 71%) - Gear 4 75% throttle, spike to 11.4, down to 8.5 and holds. 75% throttle would get full boost on this one so it is limiting it.
Datalog (20Hz Duty 80%) - Gear 3 WOT, spike to 12.2, down to 8.8 and holds

It looks it will hold a certain psi but it has a huge spike before hand before it settles to a certain value. I checked the plumbing, I removed the metal filter from the one port in case it was too restrictive, even changed the barbed fittings over from my manual boost controller to make sure they are the same size, and results ended up being the same. I used the same plumbing for my MBC. It spikes, but not as much and lasts only for an instant:

Datalog (Manual Boost Controller) - Gear 3 WOT, spike to 12.6 and over a second moves and holds at 11.5

Might be related: One odd thing I noticed, when starting up the car the solenoid will be silent, but after a run it would be slightly cracked open, hissing, pulling air from the filter port. I thought the solenoid was stuck. Turning off the car and turning back on fixed it. Yet after another run same thing. I don't think its the solenoid though because I disconnected the switched power source and it closed, then put it back on the power source and it opened?

Can someone please let me know what to try next?

I can control boost from my spring pressure (7psi) up to 26psi with boost by gear. For 10PSI I use 15% Duty, then increase 5% Duty for each 2PSI, up to 20PSI. After 20PSI, 5% gives me 3PSI so at 50% I am at 26PSI. I am running my pressure source from the compressor housing so its impossible to get the hissing from vacuum inside the IM. Activation pressure is 2 PSI, Normally Closed Config, good luck with your set-up.

No I gave up for the time being -- too busy and frustrated that I spent so much time trying to get this simple thing to work >:). What solenoid are you using? What car/specs? Do you have the diode in parallel with the solenoid?

e: I'm curious if there are any similarities in how we set it up...

We are using the mac solenoid. purchased form Xenocron and has worked with numerous of S300, Ectune, Neptune cars as im told by them. works fine in a different car with ectune. but on the current car with S300 just having so many issues. That diod is BS and i havent used it plus the kit has a diod you install in the ecu. im using the A11. My thread is below yours if you wanna look. i havent done anything with the Hz.
