KPro V2 ECT Sensor Not Updating

Post by flizoid » Wed Jul 31, 2019 2:33 pm

I have a KPro V2 on a PRB ECU running with my K24a2 swapped into 97 civic.

All of my other sensors update constantly in KManager when I'm in the live view and the car is started except for the ECT sensor.

The ECT sensor will update to the correct value when the car is started and the I start the live session but it never updates after that. I have checked for continuity on the harness and everything checks out. Its definitely getting some sort of data but for some reason it never changes.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What is the serial number that is on the K-Pro board in side the ECU?

From Help, About, what is the version of software you are using?

Can you post your calibration as well as a datalog showing the issue.

Hey Spunkster,

Thanks for responding. I've posted my current calibration and a datalog file of the ECT value never changing. It updated right at the start but never updated. I let the car run for several minutes until the needle on the temp gauge got about halfway up.

Judging by the fact that the IAT is very close to the ECT, it is probably reading correctly, but is not in the coolant stream or the cooling system needs to be bled. You should try your ECU on a known working vehicle and see if it reads correctly.

So if I plugged it into a new sensor that I had sitting in the fridge it shouldn’t increase in temp?

It’s not screwed into the coolant passage way just dangling loose.

Out in the heat it never climbs in temp.

But if I turn the car off and then back on and reconnect the temp will read higher like you expect.

Also I know you didn't see it budge in the data log. But if I run the car for several minutes until the temp gauge on my car climbs pretty high up, turn off the car and turn the car back on the ECT value will be around 190F and I'll get an error code for coolant boiling or w/e it actually is.

So the sensor is definitely in the coolant stream. It's just not actively reading the temperature while the car is running, only at startup.

I'm not running a fan switch so I need this ECT work in-order for my fans to actually kick on, among other things I'm sure.

Is there anything else I could do to test why this is happening. I don't have a friend with another car to test this ECU on at the moment.

If it is just dangling loose it will not read correctly.

You really should install a proper thermoswitch for the fans to work correctly.

I'm confused. I thought Hondata could control the radiator fan using the ECT located on the head?
That information is all over the place that you don't actually have to run a fan switch in the radiator to control the fans because hondata kpro can handle it.

If I'm not being clearly I'm doing two completely different test cases.

1. The k24 engine came with a ECT sensor installed in the head which I plugged the harness into. In the calibration I under protections I have the radiator fans set to be forced on at 180F. Correct me if I'm wrong but this settings uses the feedback from the ECT sensor on the head to turn the fans on, completely bypassing any fan switch installed in the radiator?

This is the scenario that I recored in the data logs. I start the car with the ECT sensor screwed into the head plugged in and it reads the temp. During the running of the car the temp never climbs, it doesn't even move a decimal on the left side. After several minutes I turn the car off and KManager disconnects. I Immediately turn the car back on and reconnect and the Temperature climbs from the original 88F to 170F but if I leave the car running it will never climb again.

2. I bought a new ECT sensor because I thought the one that was actually installed in the head of the engine was faulty. In order to get a clear change in the temp I first sat this new ECT sensor in the fridge to cool it down. I went outside and quickly plugged it into the harness and turned the car on and connected KManager. It immediately read a temp of like 45F or something low but never climbed after that (Mind you ambient temp outside is like 90F. I turned off the car again and turned it back on and connected KManager and the ECT was now reading 88F but again it wasn't changing in realtime.

So I know both sensors are reading the temp increases correctly, for some reason it's just updating in realtime and I don't understand what would cause that.

Why does the sensor need to be screwed into the head for it to correctly read and report a temperature? Does the head ground the sensor out or something?

I'm just trying to get on the same page here. I do really appreciate your help because honestly know one else is trying to help me understand anything.

Thanks!

Here's a video of what I'm experiencing sorry its 6 minutes long but I wanted to let the car heat up so you could see what I was talking about.

The sensor must be in direct contact with the coolant or it will just read the temp of the air around it. If there are air bubbles in the head it will not read correctly.

You really need to find someone locally that you can try your ECU in their vehicle to see if it reads the temps normally as this will tell you if it is a problem specific to your vehicle or not. There is no risk of damaging their vehicle.

Hey Spunkster,

I hope all is well. I got lucky and found a local guy that was willing to let me test out my hondata on his working car.

We first turned his car and let it reach operating temp and we were able to see it changing actively in the data logger.

We plugged in my ECU started it back up and reconnected and it was the same behavior that was happening on my car. No ECT reading it just sat there and never changed, not even a decimal place.

What do you think my next steps should be.

Thanks again for the help.

Do you have a replacement ECU to have the K-Pro installed into?

We also tried that last night and swapped it into a different working ECU that had a KPro3 in it. It still didn’t work.

I personally don’t own another ECU. They aren’t exactly cheap or easy to come by.

The guy that let me test on his car had a spare for another friends car.

We tried to exhaust all possibilities as far as whether or not it was the ECU or not.

Hey Spunkster,

I actually called today and got another guy at tech support there. He actually made me remember that I got an ODBII Scanner port wired into my harness by wire-worx!!

I hooked it up to my WIFI scanner tool and connected to OBD Fusion and it was correctly reading the Engine Coolant Temp sensor in real time.

So that leads me to believe that something is wrong with the Hondata although I'm able to successfully upload my calibration and run the car with it?

I attached a quick video of a screen recording from my phone
https://drive.google.com/file/d/12XBmwn ... sp=sharing

Is there some processes for getting this repaired or is the only path upgrading the kpro?

So you tired your K-Pro in a different ECU?
