Oil

Post by caorndorff »

Since the si reflash alows the motor to rev to 7700 not 6800 is it a good idea to up the oil to 5w30 not the factory 5w20?

5w-20 or 5w-30 will work fine. It really has nothing to do with revs, but with load. If you really hammer your car, ok, go with 5w-30. 5w-20 is excellent and there is no potential for harm or excess wear with it. imo 5w-20 is really best for short-trip drivers, but I have yet to see a problematic Used Oil (lab) Analysis with it. No excess wear, no excess shearing etc. If you have a car that calls for 5w-30 however, there is an excellent product available from Castrol, their "German Syntec" 0w-30 at AutoZone or O'Riely's. It's a thick 30 that is state-of-the-art. The only 30 I know of with Porsche Approval. It's a unique product that is unmatched in engines that can use a thick 30/thin 40. My base RSX calls for 5w-20 and is stock, so either 5w-20 or thin Mobil 1 0w-30 is the ticket.

FYI, actual viscostites:
all 20 weight= 8cSt
most 30 weight= 10cSt
German Syntec= 12cSt
most 40 weights= 14cSt

If your car is modded, go up one grade from recommended, not more.
