I agree that in order to set the timing perfect i need a timing light, However, I feel that the timing is close enough at this point that we can rule it out as being the culprit for the random leaning out at idle, as well as the possible cause for overheating. Fix the obvious faults before chasing anything else - if the battery voltage is jumping around, remove and clean all grounds, make sure the valve cover ground is in the right place, check electrical connectors for dirt & wear, check fuse box for bad connections - if there is a CEL, get the code ...
