The Hondata Land Speed Race Team Finishes 1-2
The Hondata Land Speed Race Team took first and second place honors in the
Southern California Timing Association’s Points Championship. The championship
comprises of 6 races held at the El Mirage Dry Lake Bed from May through to
November. Cars and motorcycles are timed for top speed on a 1.3 mile dirt track.
Doug Macmillan, in his Acura RSX with a K20A engine, ran twin Rotrex
Superchargers, provided by Los Angeles based KraftWerks. The twin superchargers
provided the K20A engine a reliable 25 pounds of sustained boost for over
700-wheel hp - all through a Honda transmission with off-the-shelf gear ratios.
Doug and Church Automotive’s Daniel Butler shared the driver’s seat to pull off
6 consecutive El Mirage Landspeed records. They were the only car to pull off
such a feat this season from the 232 vehicle field. The RSX’s top speed of the
year was set by Doug Macmillan at 198.388 mph into a significant headwind during
the October meet in the F/BFCC class.
The Honda CRX, the second car in the Hondata arsenal, was driven by Miriam
Macmillan and team mate Craig Corbin from Arizona. Together the team set records
at 5 out of the 6 events.
The 1990 JDM CRX was powered by a 2L K20A engine built by Joe McCarthy of
Prototype Racing, breathing through Kinsler Fuel Injection’s ITBs, making 300
wheel hp. Craig Corbin set the CRX’s top speed of the year during the November
meet in the G/FCC class, where an 80 shot supplied by the Nano-Nitrous system,
increased the CRX’s top speed from 167 to 177.768 mph.
