The sensor describes itself as an inductive sensor, but then has specs for the output type and current and is 3 wire, which would be more characteristic of a hall effect sensor. I think it will work.
Perhaps buy one sensor, wire it up and pass a piece of ferrous metal in front of it.

It was the closest characteristics I could find for the race logic equivalent, not a bad plan of yours though to buy one for now.
